Dear GSD Families:

As you plan for Spring Break, we hope that our students, staff, and families enjoy their time off.  We are continuing to work with the Florida Department of Health, CDC, and FLDOE to provide you with the latest information.  As of today, Glades County School District still has NO known cases of the Coronavirus.

Glades County School District operations will continue as normal.  Currently, a district wide closure is not anticipated.  Any future closures will be evaluated on a school-by-school basis.

Supplemental activities such as filed trips and athletic events are under review.  Updates on these activities will be provided Monday, March 23rd.

New Cruise Information

The CDC is now recommending avoiding cruise ship travel due to the risk of infection.  If your family is planning a cruise, the Florida Department of Health and Center for Disease Control are stating that you should monitor your health and limit interactions for 14 days after returning to the United States- this includes coming to school and work.  Students and Staff may return to work after limited interaction with others for 14 days if they are symptoms free.

Travel Advisories

In light of these world events, we are asking families to consider changing travel plans to any of the affected countries for the remainder of the school year.  We strongly recommend that no employees travel to countries at an Alert Level 2 or Warning Level 3.

If you are planning a trip to any Level 3 or Level 2 location, you are required to inform your supervisor and provide documentation indicating your travel plans.  The following guidance is provided by the CDC, if someone in your household is traveling/has traveled to areas with travel advisories due to COVID-19.

  • Warning Level 3    Do not report to work for 14 days from the return date.

.

  • Alert Level 2          It is strongly suggested that you stay home from work

for 14 days from the return date.

  • Watch Level 1       You are encouraged to stay home for 14 days from the

                                return date.

The Florida Department of Health is giving the following recommendations, and we will be following these as well.

Anyone (students/faculty/staff/etc.) who go on foreign travel, to any country, must self-isolate for 14 days upon return.

Anyone (students/faculty/staff/etc.) who goes on a cruise, anywhere, must self-isolate for 14 days upon return.

There should be no mass gatherings, which are defined by the CDC as “1,000-25,000 people, but the practical application is any gathering that would strain local resources.  It is left to our discretion for events with less than 1,000 people.

Glades County School District will be following these recommendations.  Our District continues to promote a series of precautions to help prevent the spread of all infectious respiratory diseases, including colds and influenza. The flu is a serious illness that can easily spread, so we advise students to refrain from reporting to school when they are sick. The following are recommendations provided by the CDC to reduce the spread of respiratory disease:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then dispose of the tissue in the trash.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using

the restroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at

least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Avoiding areas with increased risk and following CDC guidance are critical as we work together to implement preventive strategies.

I trust we can count on your support to help reduce the risk of transmission of COVID 19. If you are planning a trip, please check the most current CDC travel health notices by visiting https://www.cdc.gov/.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together for the health and safety of all.
